What is the difference between a negative ion generator and an ozone generator?
An ozonizer (ozone generator) produces ozone, which, through a process called oxidation, destroys and permanently eliminates sources of odor in the air. The functioning of an ozonizer is very different from that of an ionizer, whose primary function is to reduce airborne particles such as dust and pollen in the air.
In the beam of light shining into a room from outside, you may occasionally notice small, floating dust particles. The air ionizer targets these small, floating dust particles. These dust particles are positively charged and constantly repel each other. It is the same as if you take two magnets and try to bring the positive poles closer together. The same interaction of repulsive forces keeps these particles dispersed in the air. The air ionizer emits negatively charged particles that charge some of the floating particles with a negative charge. The negatively and positively charged particles attract each other, collide, form clusters and fall to the ground or are attracted to the ground or other surfaces.
Ionizers were once very popular for use in homes and offices during normal operation. When creating an electrical charge, they also produce a small amount of ozone, which gave the air a fresh scent (did it smell like the mountains??). However, over time, it turned out that some types of ionizers produced a larger amount of ozone, which exceeded the standards for long-term residence and work of people. In addition, the efficiency in removing particles was not always as high as the manufacturers claimed.
In contrast, ozone generators are designed to attack the source of the odor directly, oxidizing the odor-causing substances and ensuring that they do not return after the device is turned off. Ozonizers have been used for decades in hotels, apartments, car showrooms, as well as for cleaning interiors after fires and eliminating the smell of smoking. They destroy gases, not particles. Ozonizers are powerful and effective, but they are generally used without people present. The goal is shock treatment and permanent odor removal.
